Simultaneous Flag lowering Ceremony and Symbolic Removal of Mourning Band

Sailors and marines aboard the Philippine Navy headquarters in Manila observed today, July 24, the end of the one-month mourning period in honor of the late former President and Armed Forces of the Philippines' Commander in Chief Benigno Simeon Aquino III.

The Marines conducted their first-ever heliborne combat operation in Tairan, Basilan City, on July 21, 1973. The 2nd Marine Battalion landed behind enemy lines aboard 11 Huey helicopters, despite fierce resistance from the rebels.
The battalion successfully blocked enemy withdrawal and reinforcements while suffering only one casualty in action. This heliborne action was the turning point of the campaign in Basilan that broke the enemy's will to fight.
